yesterday we went to Evelina for an assessment with the physio. My son is presently trying to stand and building strength in his legs to support himself and at 19 months corrected is not yet able to sit unsupported. His core strength is gradually improving, but slowly. The Evelina physio mentioned about the 2 year deadline again to have enough core strength otherwise will be in a wheelchair . is this deadline set in stone ? Are there times when core strength to sit unsupported comes later and hence he would avoid being in a wheelchair. My son is quadraplegic, so his legs are better than his arms. he is at his right corrected age for cognitive abilities, socialisation etc.

    Hi Gladys,

We are not medically qualified professionals so we cannot really comment on medical issues. However, we have not come across this 2 year deadline before so would strongly suggest you talk to the physio further and ask for more information on what they mean and what your son’s potential outcomes are.

This deadline may be something the physiotherapist is aware of due to the age of your son, they may want your son to reach certain goals within a time frame either because neural pathways are more active in younger children but also to aid posture and breathing which can become more difficult if posture is not corrected (e.g. sitting straight with feet flat on floor if possible) before a certain age. As your son grows and increases in weight, it may be more difficult to work on core muscles and strength – depending on how he is affected.

If you’re attending the Evelina, then you’re in good hands and we feel the best thing to do is talk further with your Physio.

If we can help with anything else please let us know.
