Coenzyme Q10

I was wondering if anyone with cerebral palsy has had benefit from taking coenzyme q10 supplement? My son has dystonic CP and probably spends 4 times as much energy as his mates at school. He is academically very bright but has little control of his trunk and limbs which makes him very tired.

Hi, Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant supplement found naturally in the human body. There are claims that it may help with digestion and energy levels. However many claims for this supplement such as helping with heart disease or cancer are unproven. We would recommend you discuss this further with your son's doctor or Consultant.
It is recognised that children with cerebral palsy can use up to 3x more energy in walking, movement etc., than a child without cp depending on how the individual child is affected and to what degree. Someone with severe cp will use a lot more energy to perform a simple task than someone with mild to moderate cp. If you would like to discuss your concerns in more detail, please contact us at the Scope helpline - number at the top of this page and we can talk to you about what support your son is getting. Thanks.
