Dear all,

My name is Felix Grieve, I am a post-graduate student at the University of East London.

I am currently doing a research study on the effects of societal attitudes on disabled sexuality.

I am looking for women living with a long-term physical impairment, aged 21 or over, who would be interested in contributing to this research.

Participation would involve taking part in an informal interview at a public place of your choosing or over Skype.

I am in no way looking to analyse or judge participants, but rather to respectfully listen to what they have to say.

If you are interested please email me on u1219681@uel.ac.uk and I will be happy to explain the research in further detail.

Best wishes,

Felix

    Hi Felix
I've just registered with Scope. I'm considered "dis-abled" - NICE LABEL - after a recurrent life-threatening brain-tumour as a teenager left me with little peripheral-vision. I'd be happy to help with your research if you still need someone.

I can imagine there probably is a lot of tension around the area you are researching!

My experience of being "dis-abled" is that you are open to a lot of abuse simply because of your "dis-abled" label and that there are little or no consequences for most things if you are treated badly because of your disability. In regards to what you're doing I think that if you if you are anything society considers as marginal (so anything other than heterosexual basically) on top of being "dis-abled" this would  add to how much **** you receive on both accounts. You can't possibly be taking up 2 marginalised areas, can you?

I think also there are most definitely still boxes you are expected to fit into/tick socially as a "dis-abled" person. I don't think sexual beings are seen much in the "dis-abled" model.

Of course, there are many, many decent intelligent people out there who would never think like this but unfortunately society seems to be defined by the loopy, stupid few!

Please do have a look at my blog too - soon to be a campaign hopefully about legal and social consequences for disability-related mistreatment -http://disabilityrightsfight.com/about If you can get involved, please do!.

    Hi Rosie,

Thanks for your message and for the link to your blog. I have had a read and the first thing to say is I’m so sorry to hear you have had to put up with so much abuse as a result of the ‘disabled’ label. It really is very sad that people can be so insensitive and unkind. I agree that label is extremely problematic. Strangely, my experience is slightly different as my disabilities are invisible except to specialist doctors, so often my frustration is born out of people’s failure/refusal to acknowledge the challenges I face.

I also completely agree with what you say about norms. The underlying conceptual interest of my research is how societal norms shape the lived experience and sense of self of those who have no say in defining those norms. You are right to assume there is tension around this particularly when it comes to disability and sexual rights.

Finally, thanks for your kind offer to contribute to my research. Just to clarify, your primary impairment is the deficit in peripheral vision. Is that correct?

    Felix
