My son starting school next year.....

He's starting school and me his dad are wanting to go and talk to head teachers etc. What are the biggest questions you'd want answered when talking to them?

How will you support my child? This is a question I asked when I visited a school two weeks ago with my son in tow. What is his impairment, physical or cognitive? Can you tell us a little bit more about his needs or not?

I have three kids, theyre all teenagers now, and for me it was important to go and look around the school and get a feel for it.

I'd really want to know about the culture of the school and what pastoral support there is. Both my girls have always had additional needs, but because they've always been really academic, they're largely ignored. I'd like to know what sort of support there'll be for if and when things go wrong.

Another tip- visit on a normal school day for a behind the scenes look at the classrooms etc.

Take a list of questions with you to ask during your visit. Don’t just focus on the pictures/numbers/words. Observe the pupils carefully and pay attention to their facial expressions and reactions to lessons. Make notes as well.
