Hello! New here! I act as appointee for my 21yr old son who has autism and learning difficulties. His latest dla award ends april 2020 and currently waiting for pip decision. Very stressful!

Hi @anisty - Welcome to the community & thank you for joining. It is stressful waiting for a PIP decision as many of us can testify! If he had an assessment more than a week ago, you can ask for a copy of the assessor's report. The DWP decision maker usually goes with this, but of course you'll still have to wait for the actual decision letter. Hope this helps, but please say if we can help in any way. Thanks - i started a seperate discussion about my son in the pip section.

I thought i had reason to hope when i got a letter today saying they had all the info they needed to make a decision (no face to face) but the reply i got suggests that this letter doesnt really give much room for optimism. He could still be turned down flat.


I wish i had found these forums before i filled out his form but at least i will be better prepared for his appeal

Hi, I've just looked at your post in the PIP section.

A letter saying they have all the information they need is sent out to everyone whether they've had a f2f or it's paper-based. So, that in itself is absolutely nothing to worry about, & doesn't give an indication as to how things might go.

The fact that for each section that applied, you've said what your son can/cannot do sounds good. It's a bit different when someone has say mobility issues, where it might need further explanation as to why a person couldn't do an activity taking the 'descriptors' into account.

The evidence you've sent also sounds good; it shows your son's problems. So, there is much to be hopeful about. When I went through the PIP process, I hadn't seen specialists for years as they couldn't really help. All I had was a letter from my GP, which did explain my mobility problems, etc. I did get a standard award for both the daily living & mobility components. I went for a Mandatory Reconsideration (MR), & got the mobility component increased. Like yourself, I wished I'd joined this forum earlier as all this happened before I found this community.

Now, if the worst comes to the worst, you've got the MR option. Not many are successful at this stage, but, you now have the benefit of this forum.

Thanks so much for this reply. I was thinking it would be unfair to turn him down without a f2f but it seems that can happen then? I definitely will let you know the outcome. I find it really helpful to follow the journeys of others so hopefully our journey can also be helpful.

We did have a fast and successful outcome for universal credit recently. Stupidly, i never even looked into UC for my son as i had seen the film "i, daniel blake" and no way could my son do a work journal like that.

I only recently found out there are different categories!! My son went with a support worker to the job centre to kick off the process. I filled out his capability for work asst myself and he did get an appt for f2f.

Then, 2 days before it was due to take place, it was cancelled as they had 'new evidence' i have no idea what that new evidence was but that same day, i logged into the online account and his decision letter was there - placed in lcwra group.

That was a surprise as i thought he would have limited capacity for work. They knew he helps in the cafe. However, the autistic centre he attends said that was a great result for him and he can try voluntary things to see how he manages. 

So that one went really easily.

I know pip and uc are seperate. Its too much to hope that this one will go as easily and this is the benefit we want to hang on to. It isnt about the money. Its about him being recognised as a disabled person that needs help. He will need support right through his life after we are gone and i dont want him dropping out of the system.
