Hello there, I am a support worker looking to better myself
in terms of the support I provide to individuals in the community. I am wanting
to organize activities and was wondering what some of the common issues you, as
parents and carers come across on a day to day basis when out and about. I
would like it, if you could be so kind as to tell me some of your experiences
and issues you may come across. I am thinking in regards to before the Covid 19 Pandemic. Thank you for your time and stay safe everyone!

Hi and welcome to the community its great to have you on board.
I am a disabled mum to a 13 year old and cannot get out without assistance.
My main issue as my son was growing up was that he was unable to attend activities due to me not being able to escort him or transport him to them.
This isn't such an issue now as he is older
I also felt a bit vulnerable when he was being bullied on his way home from school as I wasn't able to pick him up or get to him and had to rely on other parents doing this for me.
Im not sure this is what you are looking for but thought it was worth a mention

I very much appreciate your response, and I'm sorry you have had to go through that. It must have been very difficult. But at the very least, your son will grow with a good understanding of disability and I bet he will be a very compassionate lad! I hope you don't mind my asking, but what is the most common issue for you when you access the community with support? If there are any, that is.
You are an admirable lady, you know. It must have been very difficult. You take good care of yourself!

Hi @Rotherham134 and welcome to the Community. How are you today? It's nice to meet you. That's great that you are looking for better insight/ideas as to how to support people in your community. I hope that you receive lots of good ideas and wish you well with it. I'm not a parent or carer myself as it's my husband who is my carer as I'm disabled with Spina Bifida, but realise what great work carers do for us. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your time with us on the forum and find it an helpful place to be. All the best.Winner of the Scope New Volunteer Award 2019.

Wow, some lovely people here
I'm not doing bad at all thank you. Yourself? I very much appreciate your response. I have been working in care (more specifically working with adults with autism and learning difficulties) for 8 years. I work in a residential setting and have come across numerous issues myself when accessing the community.
I am desperate to provide a better activity experience for people and I just thought, the only sure way of me doing that is to find more information about peoples experiences and trying to come to some sort of resolve. Even if that means organising activities in my local area for others.
Its lovely of you to welcome me. And its lovely to hear that you have your husband there with you as support and I hope you are both doing well in these trying times. All the best my dear, and take very good care of yourself!

Glad you are well, @Rotherham134. I'm doing fine, thanks. Staying safe and well and pottering about my garden as much as I can in this lovely weather. Thank you very much for your kind words. Yes, my husband is great support to me. Would be lost without him! Your job sounds very interesting and rewarding and I wish you well in your research. Take care too and all the best.Winner of the Scope New Volunteer Award 2019.

Hi again @Rotherham134
My main issue accessing the community is just that ACCESS unable to get into shops and premises restaurants etc we always have to check access when booking anywhere we new.
Any social groups I couldn't get there on my own
Most local shops are small so either cant get in due to steps or if I can cant get wheelchair around
Out of approx 25 shops I can access 4
Hope this helps i am not moaning I'm adjusted to it now
