Today is Disability Pay Gap Day

This is the day the average disabled worker stops getting paid, for the rest of the year, in comparison to non-disabled others.  That's two whole months of working for nothing.

Shani Dhanda, disability activist and founder of Diversability, is speaking out about it on Twitter; calling for more action to be taken by employers to bring about equity.

She has tweeted:

#DisabledWorkers now earn a fifth (20%) less than non-disabled workers - not including the impact of #COVID19

Disabled people's #money does not go as far: £100 for a non-disabled person is equivalent to just £68 for a #disabled person. We are likely to have a lower standard of living than non-disabled people, even when we earn the same due to #ExtraCosts & #PayGaps

The #DisabilityPayGap is even wider for #disabled women and disabled people from ethnic groups. So for me that’s three servings of discrimination in one hit because I’m #SouthAsian, a woman and experience disability. #Intersectionality #DisabledTwitter

This issue is one Scope have worked on, producing this employers guide to reporting on disability and employment in 2019 however much remains to be done.

How does this issue make you feel?  What more could be done to tackle it?  Have you experienced discriminatory pay rates as a disabled person?
