Hi @coates30, and welcome to the community. It is good to have you with us.
We have lots and lots of people in the community who either are on the Autism Spectrum themselves or who have or have had children on the spectrum. You will find plenty of people to talk to and @steve51 has given you some very useful links.
You are in a safe place here, and among friends. Don't be shy of talking to us or of asking any questions, because we are here only to help.
Warmest best wishes to you,
Richard -

Hello @coates30
Do I take it that your son's was a late diagnosis? By rough calculation he was born in 1984, and I suspect that 1984-2000 were not good years to be autistic at school.
Best to you,
Richard
(I worked in support of Autistic children at a High School from about 2006 to 2016) -
1983 he was born yes late diagnosis. At school he was always aside from the other kids

Hello @coates30
Never was good at maths If your son went undiagnosed for a long while you must have had a really awful time - and so must he. I am deeply saddened to hear that. And I can imagine your anxieties only too well, so we must see what we can do to alleviate them.
I know that when my first wife gave birth to our profoundly handicapped little girl, one of the biggest worries was what would happen to her if she survived us, but 'fortunately' or not, that did not happen.
I am putting in a link here to our 'Ask an ASD advisor' forum. I think you might find some useful information there, and you can post your own questions. It is very likely that the administrators here will move your post there anyway.
By all means, if you would like to, tell me more about the day-to-day reality you are faced with, and the kind of problems you are having to deal with.
I know it's tough.
Warmest best wishes and my profoundest respect,
Richard

Hi @coates30
Thank you for your comment. It is a quarter of a century since I lost my Jenny, so I'm sort of accustomed to it now She was terribly hard work, but still the best thing that ever happened in my life.
Now, let's look after YOU
Affection and respect,
Richard
