Hi, I’m new to this group, and I would be grateful if someone can guide me through. My brother is 23 years old, has mild cerebral pulsy with mild learning difficulties. We’ve been in the UK for about 5 years, and he’s struggling to fit in or learn. Because he arrived old to the uk, he didn’t go to the school, so we tried to enroll him to different colleges and private courses but he always fail. Last tutor said he can’t stay still for a short time in one place, and has very weak concentration on lessons even with providing him special tutor who volunteered to be with him, as he lose his concentration very quickly especially when he hold his phone. He couldn’t make any friends although he love mixing with people but his problem that he doesn’t know how to interact socially. I have spoken to the mental health service if someone can help him as he’s really willing to receive help but they said this’s not the right service for him. I would really appreciate if anyone can suggest where is the right place to get support for him.
kind regards,
Saja

Hello @Saja Morning thanks for reply.  Understand the concern it is finding the right support and care you need.

For your brother , hope any of that helps.

Mentioned @Richard_Scope because he is I believe the Information Officer on Cerebral Palsy.  From SCOPE.

He will probably contact you or you could do that by asking. Just by under the threads, posts Specific conditions.   The heading Cerebral Palsy.

Put like I have done @Richard_Scope Add question. Hope that is OK.

    Take care

    Hi @Saja
Good to meet you and welcome to the Community! Thanks to @thespiceman for including me in this conversation.
@Saja may I ask what area of the U.K. you are in? (please do not give your full address). Am I correct in understanding that your brother has not had any formal education before arriving in the U.K?

Hi @Richard_Scope thnks for replying. I live in Bolton, Lancashire. No, he did has education in Syira as he used to go to state schools, although he struggled with studying, but with support of my mother, who was always responsible for teaching him at home, and with private lessons he managed to reach year 10 but had to repeat last year twice because it was tough for him. Even with reaching that far was challenging for him as he hardly passed with borderlines.
Yet, studying in Arabic is much more easier for him than in English, and we can understand that.
And that’s why he’s been struggling with learning the Language or progressing to any study, although we tried both colleges and private courses but all seems the same for him. So far, his English level is entry 2 according to any tutor evaluation, and he can speak little English but really slow in learning comparing to anyone in his age. I hope I gave you brief story for his situation, please feel free to ask me for any other information.

    Good morning @Saja
Thanks for clarifying the situation. I'm going to include a link to a national college for people with impairments that might be able to help. I studied there myself.

    The college is:
    http://www.hereward.ac.uk/

If I can help further please let me know.

    Hi @Saja

If you think your brother may benefit from attending a college specifically for disabled people, check out this directory:

    https://natspec.org.uk/find-a-college/search/

Many of the colleges are residential, and cater for students up to 25 years of age. If you find something that looks suitable contact them to discuss availability and funding options.

    Best Wishes
