Hi @dellaamy welcome to the community!

Have you contacted your GP to refer you to NHS Wheelchair services? They assess you to find the best suitable chair that suits your needs.

The only free one is if you are claiming high rate mobility of the PIP benefit. Just like a mobility car and depending on size of scooter the largest ones cast about £35 per week. The company Mobility Giant deals in used mobility scooters sells and hires short and long term hire but as you posted you have no savings ect  you are in a difficult position.

    Hi @dellaamy

I suspect you are going to have to look at charitable provision. The Mobility Trust can provide scooters: https://mobilitytrust.org.uk/ some other charities might consider giving a grant towards the cost of buying a scooter. You can search for potential charitable funders to apply to at:  https://www.scope.org.uk/support/disabled-people/search-grants

Other people have already mentioned the NHS Wheelchair service to you. They do not provide mobility scooters, only manual and power wheelchairs. To be allocated a power wheelchair you would have to be assessed as needing to use it inside your home and outdoors.

Obtaining a scooter via the Motability Scheme as also been mentioned. Their scooters are not free as you are paying for them with a proportion of your Higher/Enhanced rate DLA/PIP mobility component (assuming you have a successful claim for this that isn't already being used for a car) If you want to check out the Scheme the link is: https://www.motability.co.uk/cars-scooters-and-powerchairs/scooters-and-powered-wheelchairs-overview/

Rental can be an option for some people depending on their financial circumstance.  There are a number of companies that will do rental scooters either in their local area or nationally. If this is an option that you want to check out a Google search will most likely provide you with some companies to explore.

    Best Wishes

There maybe a charity in your area that will help with the cost of a mobility scooter, eBay show stores around he country selling good quality scooters now at reasonable prices . Good luck, the nhs do offer a wheelchair / mobility scooter in your area but the criteria is very strict and waiting lists very long.
