    Hi
My name is Mel, I am new here and hoping for some advice. My son, aged 16, has his first hospital appointment looking at a possible adhd or asd diagnosis next week and I really dont know what to expect.  Is there anyone here who can offer any advice?

    Hello @Melcycles
Bring a pen so you can take notes during the appointment. Also prepare a list of questions to ask them. Make sure they respect you. Ask to see any reports etc as well. Discuss your concerns with their teachers. Perhaps they will have suggestions to offer you. Mention your concerns to your family doctor.
Ask your GP to refer you to a autism specialist for further assessment and testing. Remember that there is no single test that can tell you for sure but there are signs to be aware of when it comes to autism. The assessment will take some time so be patient. Find out about all treatment options including medicine and therapies.
Join a support group. This is always recommended. What about social skills training? I find that groups made up of parents also with a child with the same condition are worth joining. If nothing else you can swap ideas and strategies worth trying out.
