    Hi Cher_Scope, I'm usually asleep at 5pm!
When I am awake I'd be having a cup of tea and a sandwich, so definitely tea!
    Dinner comes later, around 7-8pm.

    I don’t eat TIL 7/8pm then I have dinner. I’m hungry...

    Dinner
We eat as early as possible with a little one. But we use the correct word — dinner.

    Tea
@Adrian_Scope interesting use of the word correct.

Thanks everyone, I'm happy to see tea take an early lead  :)

    Dinner
The poll says one thing but the thread seems to definitely say that the evening meal is dinner.

    Tea
We call it “tea” :o I kind of agree with the post that says if it was a meal out it would be “dinner”...!

Is “tea” perhaps a northern thing?

I see now, some people call the same meal tea or dinner!

A friend informed me once that she has "high tea". Well I don't have a formal tea but I do make the distinction between tea and dinner.
I have tea any time between 4 - 5pm, with a cup of tea, a sandwich and a treat.
Dinner comes later in the evening, say at around 6-8pm.
And supper, if available, is at around 10pm.

Though I must say, there are regional differences. Does it really matter?
For example, we have "school dinners" and "ladies who lunch". Yet we are referring to the same meal.

    Tea
I've always eaten my "tea" around this time. It comes from when my children were at school and were usually starving by this time because of the pack lunch at school. Also when they were smaller bed time was always very early. The time has stuck for me.
I think by the vote, it's clearly "tea" :D
I would appreciate it if members wouldn't tag me please. I have all notifcations turned off and wouldn't want a member thinking i'm being rude by not replying.
If i see a question that i know the answer to i will try my best to help.

Having lived in various parts of the country over many years i can tell you that some parts of the South say dinner and others say tea. Where live now in the North it's tea.

i forgot to add that I think there might be variations regarding the word 'tea'. If I say  I mean the drink and not a meal/dinner.

The real question is what you call the meal you eat at 1pm...

I'm with those saying tea is the evening meal you eat at home, and dinner is a fancier tea.

    Dinner
For me, a hot meal is always 'dinner' regardless of time.  But a sandwich could be either lunch or tea depending on the time.

99.9% of days I have a hot meal at 6pm, so my answer in the poll is dinner...but on those rare occasions I have a sandwich at 6pm, that would be tea...  :D
