Mobility scooter

I have cerebral palsy and have had my mobility scooter for 6 years. It’s started to tip over and I no longer feel safe on it. Just wondered if anyone had mobility scooter companies They had used that  I could research and also any idea of how you recycle old mobility scooters

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the community glad you have joined us

I would get in touch with a mobility specialist in your area who will be able to assess and recommend the best scooter for you and may also take the old one in part exchange

Good luck and keep us updated

Hi @Gemstr, how are you doing?

If you have an occupational therapist or physiotherapist, ask them for advice on what you need and what products are available.

Please check out this link on working with your occupational therapist to find the best equipment for your needs

    Working with your occupational therapist

Look for online discussions about what other people with similar conditions use, such as:

    • relevant Facebook groups
    • AskSara, a website that provides online advice about buying disability equipment

Think about how you plan to get the equipment you need and how to pay for it and what to consider before ordering it.

The links below have good tips on what to look out for:

When you’ve decided what equipment you want, and how you will get it, focus on researching the product.

    • Look for reviews online.
    • Go to the manufacturer’s website to get information on the equipment.
    • Watch out for any product recalls or warnings.
    • Find out if you can trial the product to see if it’s right for you.

    Reviews are not professional advice

Advice on communities, forums, customer reviews and social media are often based on one person’s experience. Finding more reviews may help you to understand how people feel about equipment, but reviews are not professional advice.

Hi @Chloe_Scope thank you so much for the information, apologies for my late reply I have not had access to my emails . I have not got an occupational therapist I have tried to get one previously but was told there was a waiting list and never pursued it further. I was discharged from the physiotherapist when I left school and haven’t seen one since I do have a NHS Wheelchair but it’s about 12 years old and difficult for me to propel on my own. So have been using my scooter. I will be sure to check out the links you attached, many thanks I appreciate your reply

Hi @Gemstr, if you feel the NHS wheelchair isn't suitable then you are able to have another assessment.

I hope you have a positive time at the mobility specialists. Please do let us know how you get on. :)

    Hello Gemstr

I've recently got a new scooter so I looked them up on Amazon and that helped as not only could I see all different types/makes and work out what was best for me, but the outlets were also listed so I 'phone the outlets and a lot of the businesses will come to you.  And if the product wasn't good for you there is no pressure to buy!  It's best to have someone with you when they come out though!

Hi Tori.  Yes, it's great thanks.  I nearly brought 1 online, but my nephew to see it and we both could see that for me it would have been totally wrong, as the seat was so tall I couldn't even put my feet on the board and had to sit on the edge of the seat to reach the handle bars, so it's best to try a few different ones.  Denise11

Definitely sounds like you've made the right decision @Denise11, I'm glad it's great :)

It is always better to try before you buy, especially with such an important purchase like this one.

Thanks @Denise11 for the tip I will be sure to check out Amazon. Like you say it’s best to check out the scooter in person as each one is different. I have not had chance to go out and look as yet but thankyou everyone for your input and insights and @Chloe_Scope i will  be sure to let you know how I get on at the mobility specialists, thanks again everyone.
