thanks... might have a word with her o.t as they are rather expensive and no way i can afford one for her... normal bikes are so cheap and it annoys me that if a child isnt classed as normal you have to pay the earth to get them the simplest things... so unfair... anyway thanks again for ur help n if o.t cant help then i'll have to save up for one for her... had to buy my own wheelchair for her as they refused her one as said she can still go in her normal pushchair but kids at school where calling her a baby so she just didnt go on trips but can now with her wheelchair, they bit usless where i live in the sticks lol

    Hi
Try ebay and just type in special needs. There are often tricycles there and even it they have supports these can usually be removed.

    Hi Amanda,

I had a tricycle when I was little, as I have a genetic skin fragility condition, and falling off of a bike when learning would have caused me a lot of damage. Mine was a 'Pickle' by Pashley - http://www.pashley.co.uk/products/pickle.html They also make tricycles with special needs in mind - http://www.pashley.co.uk/lists/special-needs.html

Mine was bought for me by the physios or OTs (I'm afraid I can't remember exactly who) at my local hospital. I needed exercise, but can't walk far at all, and it helped me interact with the kids in our area, who come to our road to ride their bikes. I absolutely loved my Pickle.

If you have no luck, please let me know as I might know someone who can help.

    All the best,
    Mel

hi there Libi also has a mild cp wears AFO's and a lycra suit. she was desparate for a bike but riding one with two wheels or stabilisers was not an option. we found "Theraplay" http://www.theraplay.co.uk/trilo.html at a special kids fun day- the rep was fab he adjusted the trike on the stand and put lib on it, he assessed her and then made some tweaks and off she peddled screaming with delight. it was defo worth having the rep take a look as his stance was that bike riding needs to be fun and therapy if it is tough then kids get fed up, his comment that " all kids deserve to feel the wind in their hair!" was the one that did it. she required more add ons than i had though about - lateral support and straps on pedals but i have to say she loves it and is able to ride across the beach, through the woods etc it really does give her excellent exercise as well as great fun ( colour selection is cool)- the trike was expensive but our health visitor at the time applied to a local charity for us and they kindly funded half.
At a recent motor impairment clinic app the physio explained that they have a trike clinic and that when we feel madams trike is too small they will reassess her and they will look for funding or part funding for her next one. I wonder if your hospital have a similar clinic. I think it's terrible that your young lady is expected to ride in a buggy it is so important that she feels like a big girl and that her peers see that too and it doesnt seem fair that you are expected then to provide something so fundamental to her needs, Libi was provided with a wheel chair by WCS when she was four as she informed them that she was too grown up for her maclaren buggy, she fitted nicely actually but obviously felt that she was too grown up bless her.

    good luck x

Hello Amanda, you can get a speciliast bike or tricycle like my son who is 7 years of age made and apply for a grant. Check the website out CEREBRA and apply for funding. My sons schools ot has just done this and we are waiting to see what happens the cost of the bike for my son is 1,400, its heavy and has a bag on the bike for tools for the bike and cos he cant hold on they attach a glove with velcro to his hand to stop him thinking hes going to fall off. Also in different areas they have cycling clubs we you can all go as a family and hire out (i think) the specially adapted tri cycles they are a wonderful thing to be able to do ride a bicycle son looking forward to doing this so much. It comes with a parent handle not at the back but at the front so you can pull them, specialist said take him to a small hill and let him go and then he might get the hang of cycling by himself!!!!! its worth a go so do please check the website out. There are other charities that will help you out. If you want to know what charities let me know and i will list them for you. good luck. Happy pedalling.

You could also look at MISSION Cycles they provide Good Trikes and not as expensive as some companies. There are lots of charities that would fund a trike too. Whizz-kids Cerebra maybe a local disabled charity. I got a trike for my child age 6 she has SD CP mild balance issues and couldnt manage a two wheeler even with stabelisers. The trike was the best thing we could have got her She got a red one with a basket on the back to carrry her dolls in It was Heavy and she found it difficult to pedal but with a lot of encouragement and pushing and pulling she rode her trike. She outgrew it after 3/4 yrs so we got her a BMX Trike which she uses to go to school on now she is 12 and it gives her some independance and she has raised money for others on it too.

We have just had an assessment for the theraplay trike, having a quest 88 assesment before we make a decision, was at the mobility roadshow at the weekend and caudwell were there (charity) and if you can cover 20% of the cost they are putting through applications for funding withing 6-8 weeks I believe they said might be worth getting in contact?

Hi, I also looked into this but was amazed at the prices of theraplay stuff. My 9 year old has diplegia, with similar problems to your child, but is not 'bad' enough to warrant a proper special needs trike. On googling through I found a product called Adjustabilisers, made by a man in Wales with a child with similar needs to my son. They cost about
