Persistent early waking

My son was born with CHARGE syndrome - he's now 11. His sleep pattern has always been erratic, but over the last couple of years he was woken earlier and earlier. He's at senior school now and is so tired by the end of each day and it worsens as the week goes on. Once he wakes he simply cannot go back off to sleep - he is simply wide awake. It is common for CHARGE children to be medicated for sleep but we wondered if there were was any advice to help us before we reached that point. Thanks

    Hi Lisa
Have a look at our sleep routine, this will help him to wind down and get ready for sleep http://www.scope.org.uk/support/families/sleep/routine
We would advise him to go to bed at 10.30pm initially in order to deprive him of sleep, this should make him so tired he should sleep longer in the morning, once he is sleeping longer you can start to bring the bedtime earlier by 10minutes every 3 nights until you notice it starts affecting his waking time,  you have then found his bodies natural sleep requirements.
Remember to do this 7 days a week, no lay-ins at weekends.
    Good luck
