@mumof3boys You don't say what equipment he is using with the headphones. Are his headphones connected to a laptop, tablet or some other piece of equipment?

An example is this piece of software that allows the user to talk and have the software learn the speech etc. It's called Dragon http://www.nuance.co.uk/for-individuals/by-product/dragon-for-pc/home-version/index.htm
And for example a screen keyboard in windows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtBi3lK9S4o

Ok so he can go to sleep without them. I can understand that you can't get a speech therapist on the NHs. I had great difficulties getting a speech therapist for my daughter.
I don't know whether you could afford a therapist, but this link, will allow you to find a speech therapist in your area and once you have found them, you can type in the search dialogue box "Selective Mute", it will find therapists that deal with that. I will put the link, in case you might want to try it. http://www.helpwithtalking.com/Default.aspx
However, hang on in here, and I am sure somebody who has gone through similar issues will be on to help. -
