How to avail a home equity mortgage?

Hello,
I work as a network engineer in a Sudbury based MNC. A few months back, my wife had a renal transplant surgery. I routinely relied on credit cards for her medical bills. Now, I'm in a financial trouble as the credit card debt accumulated.
I think it's a good idea to use a home equity mortgage from some other lender to consolidate the debt. The home equity mortgages might not be cheap, but they can be obtained easily when compared to the other types of financing. I own a condo in Kingston. While browsing on the internet, I came across a few mortgage brokers offering home equity loan in Ontario. I'm unaware of the regulations to be followed and the documents produced. Please help me on this. Thank you in advance!
